Some of the main achievements from the past 3 years.
OUSU made your life cheaper
• Cheap entry and cheap drinks at Pulse Nation nights
• Forcing the high street to drive down its prices on cap and gowns through a 45% reduction in the price over 3 years through undercutting the market
• Ensuring that there is now a price ceiling on library fines
• Successfully fought for transparency in the index that is used to calculate your rent and through freedom of information requests ensured that your common officers know how much other colleges were charging their own students
• Secured representation for your voice on the University fees committee
• Ran a massively well attended accommodation workshop to ensure that students could deal effectively with landlords
OUSU made sure you get the quality education you paid for and you deserve
• OUSU won on getting prelim retakes for students
• OUSU won on getting the University to release exam timetables 2 months in advance not a day in advance which used to be the case
• OUSU successfully lobbied for more graduate workspace in the new humanities super-library
• OUSU fought successfully to standardise library opening hours across the University - getting longer opening hours helping graduates and finalists especially.
• OUSU won on getting a University Learning Adviser offering support on essay writing and thesis planning
• OUSU was the impetus for an investigation into transfer status
• Played a major role in the new Groupware IT system which will replace herald making your life easier
OUSU made your time in Oxford more inclusive and safer
• OUSU was the driving force behind getting CCTV on the Cowley Road and the Magdalen Roundabout which went live in January 2009
• Ran an incredibly successful Gender Equality in Michaelmas Term 2008 shaping gender discourse in Oxford
• Created the International Students Campaign and ran a huge International Festival in 2008
OUSU helped remove the barriers that hinder admissions into Oxford
• OUSU produced and sent Alternative Prospectuses to over 3,000 schools in the UK
• OUSU ran access conferences in areas which are under represented at Oxford such as Northern Ireland and Scotland
• OUSU won on online graduate admissions bringing the admission of graduates into the 21st Century
OUSU made a difference to our local and global community
• Coordinated colleges Charities officers releasing them to raise over £30,000 Michaelmas 2009
• The OUSU run Raise and Give (RAG) committee which raised over £12,000 for local, national and international charities over the course of Michaelmas 2009
• Ran Oxford's Got Talent with all proceeds going to Charity
• Successfully secured a commitment from the University on Socially Responsible Investment (SRI)
• An Environment and Ethics Campaign was the driving force behind the University and all Colleges switching to ‘green electricity’
• The Environment and Ethics committee launched the college bag for life, which has sold over 1,500 to date
OUSU listened to you...and reformed
• OUSU this year created smaller committees of Council to make OUSU less intimidating but will also ensure that that policy that you help make is more professional
• OUSU successfully lobbied to get a Student Adviser, finally bringing us into line with other Student Unions and meaning that students who need advice have even more resources
• OUSU listened and created a permanent business manager and a permanent financial officer to ensure that your union has more stability and continuity
• OUSU listened and now the OUSU President regularly contacts the student body through email and a page in the Oxford Student
• Finally created a Central Student Venue working group which will ask the questions that have not been asked thoroughly before
OUSU has achieved and will continue to do so with your support
