More information
[undefined]: LGBTQ Council
Formerly known as Queer Rights, we are the autonomous campaign that works in the interests of Oxford’s LGBTQ students. We hold speaker events on a range of topics (previous guests have included a representative from First Sunday), organise focus groups (for example on trans issues within the University), and run campaigns on matters of relevance to all LGBTQ individuals, whether or not they are members of the University.
If you have any suggestions for campaigns, or questions about what we do, please don’t hesitate to get in contact: either come along to a meeting; or, if you don’t want to, just send us an email. We understand that coming along to meetings can be a bit daunting, so if you would like a committee member’s phone number so you can be sure of finding us, please do email and say.
Committee members 2007-2008:
Chair: Mohsin Khan [chair.lgbtq@ousu.org]
Campaigns co-ordinator: Beth McDowell [campaigns.lgbtq@ousu.org]
Treasurer: Hannah Thompson [treasurer.lgbtq@ousu.org]

Current campaigns:
Our major campaign this year focuses on queer women’s sexual health and how there is very little information available on transmission of STDs between female sexual partners. We are in the process of producing a leaflet and poster that discuss the risks of disease transmission and promote safer sex.
Our other campaign is about LGBTQ mental health and seeks to raise awareness both of the specific mental health problems that affect LGBTQ individuals, and the particular approaches required to treat them.
Facebook group:
We now have a Facebook group! The group will be used to advertise any upcoming speaker events, as well as dates, times and locations of open meetings.
LGBTQ Handbook:
OUSU’s excellent handbook on matters LGBTQ covers everything from coming out, to sex and relationships, to LGBTQ culture and history. If you would like a copy pidged to you, email welfare@ousu.org.
Mailing list:
If you would like to be added to the [undefined] mailing list, please email welfare@ousu.org. The mailing list is used to advertise open meetings and speaker events, and also to circulate information on upcoming events that might be of interest to list members.
Meetings:
We have open meetings every other week, usually (but not always) at 7pm on a Friday. Precise dates and locations will be circulated in advance via the mailing list and Facebook group.
