Postgraduate Taught Students
Information for PGT students
Oxford offers an impressive array of postgraduate taught (PGT) courses, leading towards such degrees as the MSt, MPhil, BPhil, BCL, MJur, MBA, MSc and MFa. These courses reflect a mixture of traditional Oxford tutorial teaching (where one or two students discuss their work with a faculty member) with lectures, seminars and classes.
The termly lists of lectures and seminars can be found at www.admin.ox.ac.uk/pubs/lectures. Paper copies may be available at the relevant faculty or department. Students should also receive formal notice of invitations to classes and seminars.
Tutorial attendance is, in almost all cases, compulsory. Typically, a tutorial will involve one or two students reviewing a set piece of work with a faculty member.
PGT students are examined through a combination of coursework essays, problem sets, written examinations, theses or dissertations, and oral examinations (viva voce exams, or simply vivas). Written examinations are conducted under very formal regulations and are nearly always in Examination Schools on the High Street. Candidates must wear full academic dress (sub fusc) for written and oral exams. If you need special arrangements made (for example for medical reasons), you should contact your Senior Tutor or Academic Administrator in College as soon as possible. If you are concerned about sitting long, timed, written exams, you can ask a faculty member to set and mark a mock paper. If English is not your first language and you would like a bilingual dictionary, you should request permission for this at the same time as your submit your exam entry form.
