11. FEMINIST SEMINAR SERIES
Date: Wednesdays of each week
Time: 9.30pm to 10.30pm
Venue: Exeter College, The Stapledon Room
Week 1 kick starts the series with Sara Ababnehs presenting her DPhil
research on 'A War of Words; Muslim Feminists and the Quest for Gender
Equality'. She will take us through ways in which Muslim women have
used Islam to improve their lives, what Muslim feminist academics have
written on the topic and how Islamic political activists better their
lives through this framework. She will argue that Muslim feminists and
Islamic political party members should inform each other's struggles
and work and that difference between the methods women use to resist
should not be used as a reason to delegitimise one or the other. Sara
will consider how Muslims regard Islamic teachings as authoritative in
determining how they should lead their lives but how Muslim feminists
have argued that in regard to women it is mostly traditions and
culture (regarded as being distinct from religious teachings) which
determine how women are treated (or mistreated). She examines how
Muslim feminists have challenged the views concerning gender relations
that are commonly held to be Islamic and the various mechanisms Muslim
feminists use to confront what they perceive as unjust attitudes
towards women.

12. INVITATION TO THE SUMMER SESSIONS OF THE ACADEMY OF CULTURAL
DIPLOMACY, BERLIN
Date: June to August 2008
Time: N/A
Venue: Berlin
The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (ICD) is pleased to announce that
it is now taking applications for the 'Summer Session' of the Academy
of Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin, Germany. The Academy will be running
weeklong courses between June and August 2008. These will explore the
theory and practice of cultural diplomacy in a thorough, hands-on
manner against the backdrop of the culturally vibrant city of Berlin.
The Academy's courses have been specifically tailored to suit recent
University graduates and students close to the completion of their
Degree, as well as Young Leaders in the early stages of their
professional careers. They are designed to complement the academic and
professional development of participants and act as both a resume
builder and networking opportunity. Each session will increase
participant's understanding of cultural diplomacy and its practical
applications, imparting them with greater confidence and improving
their chances of building successful cross-cultural relationships.
In an increasingly interconnected world, the skills obtained from one
of the Academy's courses give participants a significant head start
over their peers. This rewarding experience is made all the more so by
the experienced Academy faculty and the diversity of course
participants. The Academy experience does not end with the conclusion
of the weeklong course, but continues beyond the program as
participants gain access to ICD's extensive global network.
In addition, to a strong academic content, Academy courses also offer
participants the opportunity to take full advantage of the Academy's
Berlin location. Courses incorporate elements of the rich and vibrant
cultural scenes for which the city is famous. Participants are given
the opportunity to see Berlin from a perspective not offered to
tourists and to speak with a variety of distinguished individuals
interested in promoting cultural understanding in this city of diverse
cultural backgrounds.

14. FEMINIST RESEARCH METHODS - AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Date: 4th to 6th February 2009
Venue: Stockholm University
http://www.kvinfo.su.se/femmet09/
E-mail: femmet09@kvinfo.su.se

Most feminist researchers have long since agreed that there are no
specifically feminist research methods. The expression "feminist
methods" is therefore used as shorthand for methods used by feminists
in all fields of research. This international conference is devoted to
the exchange of experiences and innovations in feminist research,
specifically the methods and research tools we use.
The conference is open to researchers in all disciplines, inter-
disciplines and directions of research. Deadline for papers,
programme, details of registration, and practical information will be
announced on the web site in April.
