What's on in Oxford...

OUSU Women's Campaign would like to let you know that there are  a brilliant load of fantastic events in Oxford in the run- up to International Women's Day on Saturday 8th March.

MONDAY


The Road Less Travelled: Feminism Today

2pm Entrance: Free. Wheelchair access. All welcome.

- The Saskatchewan Room, Exeter College, Turl St, Oxford, (check-in at the Porter’s desk on arrival)

 A panel discussion by the students of the University of Oxford airing the relevance of feminism in today’s world.  A different perspective offered by each member of the panel, followed by an interactive session with the audience. Innocence Lost exhibition launch
7.30pm, the Jam Factory, Oxford

You are invited to the opening of 'Innocence Lost', an exhibition of paintings portraying violence against women by Jeroo Roy, with introduction by the artist and guest speaker Nazir Afzal OBE, Director of the Crown Prosecution Service London West, national lead on so-called honour killing.

Organised by Amnesty International Oxford City Group. Suggested donation £2.50.

Exhibition runs from Monday 3 March to Saturday 8 March 2008 at the Jam Factory.

The event is part of the Oxford International Women's Festival.



FILM and DISCUSSION- THIRTEEN
8pm - Wadham JCR
Hosted by OUSU Women's Campaign and Wadham SU

This term's final Women in Film screening. Dr Maria Donapetry will be discussing 'Thirteen', the "emotionally wrenching, not to mention terrifying" story of two wild teenage girls, starring Holly Hunter, Evan Rachel Wood and Nikki Reed. What begins as youthful curiosityspirals into a kind of game of dares involving increasingly dangerous risks -stealing, getting piercings, experimenting with sex, drinking and taking drugs,and much more...

Sex and the Media: Marilyn to Mary Kate -
Venue: The Saskatchewan Room, Exeter College, Turl St, Oxford (check in at the Porter’s desk on arrival).
6.00 pm – 7.30 pm. Entrance: free. Wheelchair access. All welcome.
The talk will be centred on the representation of the female body in the media, where a range of clips and images will be shown.  The ensuing group discussion will raise issues such as whether these images are objectifying or empowering. Organisers: The University of Oxford. Contact: 07920 095356

The informal networking event will kick off with a panelled discussion by our top line-up of speakers. Over wine and cheese you will have a chance to ask questions and get to know what other academics are doing in Oxford.

The event lasts for one hour on the final Thursday of term of the International Gender Studies seminar series at Queen Elizabeth House. Palestinian Women Speak Out
8pm, Old Refectory, Wadham College

As part of a national speaking tour organised by the Britain-Palestine Twinning Network and to coincide with the week of International Women's Day, Oxford Students' Palestine Society will be hosting a talk by three female students from the West Bank.

Rawan Abu Amreyya, an English and Gender Studies student at Al Quds University in Abu Dis Shatha Zeedeh, a student of the Al Quds Open University in Salfeet and Imtethal Alaqad, a student of Al-Najah University in Nablus ...will be talking about women and the Palestinian situation and answering
questions.




Bluestocking second issue launch
7.30pm, Taylorian Institute (on St Giles next to the Ashmolean)

Bluestocking, the online intellectual women's journal, is holding its
Launch Event for the second issue of the publication. Come to the Taylorian Institute at 7.30pm on Thursday 6th March, and enjoy a great evening. There will be plenty of wine, and speakers like Dr Diane Purkiss and Dr Joy Hendry talking about the creative achievements of women, as well as a special message from
broadcaster and historian Bettany Hughes. The new issue of the journal will be launched live during the evening, so be the first to read articles based on some brilliant female thinkers; from Mina Loy to Zelda Fitzgerald.

Breaking the Silence: a one women show about Rachel Carson. Written and performed by Liz Rothschild - Venue: Ruskin College, Walton St, Oxford.

In 2007, a century after her birth, Rachel Carson scientist, writer and pioneering ecologist was voted top environmentalist. Her achievements included proof of the link between pesticides and their damage to the environment and their impact on human and animal health. She single-handedly took on the US government and agro-chemical industry in her groundbreaking book “Silent Spring’ published in 1962. Meet this remarkable woman played by actress Liz Rothschild, who in this dynamic and moving one-women play, reveals stories about Rachel Carson never told in her lifetime and how they reverberate today. Green College Event - Vagina Monolgues and Open Mic Night - 8pm

Join us to celebrate International Women’s Day at Green College on Saturday 8th March 2008 at 8.00pm in the Green College Common Room

The evening will be begin with a staged reading of “The Vagina Monologues”, a play by Eve Ensler. The recurring theme of the play is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment and the ultimate embodiment of individuality. The monologues will be followed by an open mic night, with ALL students encouraged
to share poems, songs, and stories celebrating women. The theme is broad and your personal interpretations are welcome!

Men and women, please come along to enjoy an informal evening with a show performed by beautiful and fun Greenies and an eclectic open mic. Contribute in your own way, either by taking the mic or simply sitting back to enjoy...
Wine and snacks will be served, of course!

Women in Slavery: Then and Now - 7.00 pm Venue: Asian Cultural Centre, Manzil Way (off Cowley Rd), Oxford. Entrance: Free, donations welcome, refreshments. Wheelchair access. All welcome. Khi Rafe (UNISON Regional Equalities Convener, Greater London) makes a presentation on  ‘Women and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade’ and African women’s contribution to the abolition of  the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Act of 1807. Dr Sondra Hausner (Lecturer in the Anthropology of Migration, Oxford University) will speak about both the rhetoric and the reality of ‘Trafficking of Women from Nepal’ in relation to modern-day ‘slavery’.
