Sources of support: Graduate Specific

Supervisor: they will  normally be the first person you contact with any academic problems you are having, and it is important that your supervisor is kept up to date with any changes in your circumstances that may affect your studies, or with any concerns you have.

Director of Graduate Studies: if you have been unable to resolve matters with your supervisor, or wish to make a complaint you should get in contact with your Director of Graduate Studies (DGS).  They will attempt to resolve any problems or complaints informally within the department as a first step.  Contact your course administrator or supervisor, or check the departmental website to find out who your DGS is.

Graduate Joint Consultative Committee: although each department will have their own system for doing this, they will have some form of course rep in place who can raise student concerns about courses or facilities with the department, and most divisions now have committees at which the reps for each department come together to discuss divisional issues.  Elections are held at the start of the year, and if you’re not sure who your rep is your course administrator should be able to tell you.

College advisor/Senior Tutor/Tutor for Graduates: your college can provide invaluable support if you are experiencing academic problems.   Your college advisor should not be from your department, meaning that they can offer impartial advice and support, and can accompany you with meetings with your supervisor or DGS is necessary.  They can also make applications for special consideration if you have a medical problem affecting your exams, or need to suspend or extend your studies, on your behalf.  Your colleges‘ Senior Tutor/Tutor for Graduates will also be helpful, and can contact your department on your behalf.
