Disability Awareness Week
OUSU's Students With Disabilities Campaign and the Disability Advisory Service host the first ever Disability Awareness Week in 3rd Week MT 10! The week comprises of a series of lunch time talks along with several stand alone events. For more information please email swdofficer@ousu.org.
Disability Awareness Week (6th Week MT) is back for the 2nd year running, and brings a programme of events for disabled and non-disabled students alike. The headline events are disabled comedians Abnormally Funny People at St John's, and the quadriplegic sailor Hilary Lister at the Oxford Union. DAW aims change attitudes and bust myths about disability in Oxford.
Monday – There Will Be Blood, Magdalen Film Society, Magdalen College, 7.30pm
A critically acclaimed film starring Daniel Day-Lewis, and deaf actor, Russell Harvard. There Will Be Blood showcases disabled talent and the relevance of sensory impairment.
Tuesday – Careers Drop-In, 2-4pm Disability Advisory Service
A drop-in session for students with disabilities, with the University Careers Service and Citi Group.
Tuesday – Abnormally Funny People, 7pm, St John’s Auditorium
Two of Britain’s funniest disabled comedians come to Oxford, from disabled comedy troupe Abnormally Funny People. Never thought disability could be funny? Come along, and be proven wrong. Tickets available from Oxford Playhouse.
Wednesday – Sign Language Workshop, 2-4pm, location TBC
An opportunity to learn the basics of British Sign Language with a local expert. To reserve a place, email welfare@ousu.org.
Thursday – Bake Sale, Worcester Street, 9am-3pm
Grab some freshly made cakes, biscuits and cookies, all in aid of local disability charity K.E.E.N. All bakers welcome: contact welfare@ousu.org.
Friday: Employability, University College, 2-4pm.
A careers workshop from non-profit organisation Employability designed to provide recruitment advice and information for disabled students.
Friday: Hilary Lister, The Oxford Union, 8pm
Oxford alumnus and quadriplegic, record-breaking sailor Hilary Lister comes to Oxford to speak about her inspirational story of sailing solo around the British Isles.
