Professional Support (The Counselling Service)
The University Counselling Service
Professional Support
The University Counselling Service, 11 Wellington Square, 9.15am – 5.15pm, (2)70300
This is a professional counselling service. It was set up and is co-funded by the University and the colleges, but this does not affect its confidentiality and impartiality. It aims to help with a wide range of emotional and psychological issues. The service provides group therapy as well as one-to-one sessions. If appropriate, the counsellors will refer people to other organisations. There is usually a short waiting period – the Counselling Service aims to see people for an initial session within five working days of the student making contact and then to offer regular counselling at an early date. Waiting times for a first appointment can be longer than five working days at busy periods such as the beginning of the Michaelmas and Hilary terms but every effort is made to avoid a delay which involves two weekends. However, it’s normally still a lot quicker than going via the NHS; they also try to reserve places for urgent cases.
The Counselling Service should be
able to help you explore some of the issues behind an eating disorder
and if necessary, refer you to relevant clinics or organisations. The
Counselling Service is open in term time and the vacations, on
weekdays. You can telephone, email, or call into the offices to make
your appointment. For more information see
