Reasons for getting better

The Road to Recovery

Sometimes it’s really hard to think of reasons for getting better. It just seems easier and safer to stick with what you know you can do well. These are some reasons I came up with that helped me finally bite the bullet and get help.

Advantages of getting better:

- I will be a less boring person. Thoughts no longer dominated by calories and weight-loss graphs.

- I will be less self-involved, less self-obsessed and have more time and energy for friends.

-With the time that I used to spend obsessively exercising, thinking about food, trying not to eat etc I can start doing things I used to enjoy like going to Port Meadow and going to see friends in plays.

- I won't be able to avoid problems by starving/bingeing and will therefore learn how to cope with life and its problems.

- My academic work will improve as I will feel less tired all the time and will have better concentration. I might even have the energy to enjoy it instead of seeing every essay as a huge ordeal.

- My relationship with food at the moment is the most important relationship in my life. That is very, very sad.

- I won’t feel so ashamed and disgusted with myself all the time, will have better self-esteem.

- This may lead me to stop constantly putting myself down in front of other people.

- I will feel less incredibly insecure in relationships and realise that my boyfriend is very unlikely to notice, much less care, whether or not I’ve gained weight.

- I will care less about my weight and will consequently care less about the weight of others. I will be able to have friends who are thinner than me and not mind.

- I will be able to stop having to come up with excuses (allergies, sickness etc) for not eating in front of other people.

- I will be able to cook for my friends and eat with them.
